? What is a tooth extraction?
It is the removal of a tooth in a safe way. This procedure is performed quite often at our office, so you’re in excellent, caring hands. It is sometimes referred to as “pulling teeth,” or “getting a tooth out.”
If you need a wisdom tooth extracted, our dentists will discuss your options to determine the best course of action. In certain circumstances we may refer you to an oral surgeon.
? Why are tooth extractions needed?
- If a patient has very serious gum disease called periodontitis
- If a patient needs a tooth extracted to prepare for braces or orthodontic treatment
- If a tooth is positioned the wrong way, which could lead to tooth crowding issues or damage to surrounding teeth
- If a tooth is impacted (an impacted tooth cannot properly emerge through the gums), which often happens with wisdom teeth
- If a tooth has been broken and cannot be repaired
- If a tooth is heavily decayed and cannot be saved
? What are wisdom teeth?
Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars located all the way in the back of the mouth, on the top and bottom. They usually erupt through the gums during the late teenage years or the early twenties.
If a patient has enough room in his or her mouth, the wisdom teeth usually emerge fully and straight. If the wisdom teeth will not cause crowding issues, you may not need to remove them.
? Why do wisdom teeth get removed?
They are mainly removed so they do not cause problems with the other teeth. Also, if the wisdom teeth only partially erupt through the gums, they may become difficult to clean, and this can lead to plaque accumulation problems and tooth decay. In this circumstance, you may want to remove the wisdom teeth.
Another reason to remove wisdom teeth– if they are not positioned straight and do not erupt straight. This can cause crowding issues with your other teeth.
